try cleaning the battery contacts on the strap? I'm not sure how much juice those things draw, but it might not be enough to self-clean.

They looked pretty clean, but I scraped them a bit anyway. that might have helped.

This strap is from like 2006, so it could be just old. I do have 3 other ones (2 never used) I can try.
