4. More information will appear within two to three weeks.
5. E-mail me with any questions.
6. It will be awesome to see you all.
What's the best way to organize transportation? I will be arriving on the evening of the 1st and am probably still too young to rent a car.
Also, is anyone going from the camp to the Anza-Borrego meet that I could hitch a ride with and possibly get deposited at some nearby airport at the end?
I plan for AB, but its to early to be 100% sure. Also Rex is planning to attend AB.
With a $20–25/day ransom, John is no longer too young to rent a car. Still. There IS public transit from all three Bay Area airports to very close to the place. It will take at least 2 hours, but it's quite doable. Info will be provided.
Maybe you can lay out a rough schedule ( or is it somewhere already ) ?? what the weather should be like ?
Okay, revised version of what we will be doing. We will fly from Phoenix to San Jose/SF etc. Now the question is if we should rent a car for the two weeks we are there or not. We will then fly down to LA ( thought the camp was near L.A, I am not sure why?!?!?) to go to Disney Land etc, probably already on the 10th. Then we will need to find a ride to Anza-Borrego.
Anza-Borrego is not particularly close to the LA airport, or to the Santa Ana/OC airport (Disneyland). It is best to fly into Ontario or San Diego. Palm Springs airport is even closer, but Southwest doesn't fly there so flights are a bit expensive.
As to the schedule—tentatively, technical exercises are planned on Fri–Sun 05–07 January. The rest will be "just running", with the goal being to get your training program a shake-up in the base phase.
The question for me is basically which airport it is going to be easiest to find a ride to from the AZ meet on Monday.
Oh, and where can I find info on getting to the training camp from San Francisco airport via public transit?
John, if there are people returning to airports after the AB meet, they'll most likely be going to San Diego. Ontario is on the way, iirc, so either one of those would probably be a safe bet.
I'll be driving back to LAX from Anza on Sunday night, but like people have said, its pretty far away, so your flight would have to be really late or Monday.
Is it going to be a big burden if a guy new to the sport attends? I will have had a few competitions under my belt by then, but only one serious one and I'm not an elite orienteer... I don't want to be getting in above my head. I'm confident I can keep up running with about anyone, and I am confrtable with conventional land-navigation, but I'm not an elite orienteer yet and probably have a long way to go. I'm really pumped up to get what sounds like will be some outstanding training from the pros, and to meet some other athletes, but if this is not a good fit for me, please let me know. Thanks!
Plan to leave to AB from Bay Area Friday evening, January 12 around 6pm (probably will be in LA around 11pm). I'll be returning Sunday night from AB through LA, around 5-6pm, that's for sure. Can get a ride if anyone interested.
I start new job next Wednesday, so details about trip will be clarified in a couple weeks.
div, can i get a ride with you from the aptos camp to AB? I can meet you wherever is convenient. I guess you're leaving from san leandro? Thanks
I might fly in from Grass Valley depending on the weather, otherwise I'll drive if anyone is in the Sacramento area and needs a lift- air or land- whatever.
victoria - sure, we discuss details later.
does anyone know what is going on at anza borrego on monday? i'm looking at tickets now and need to know when i can fly back, or if i should even stay for the monday event...
The tentative schedule I saw has the same as previous years for monday: Scavenger-O. It's a score-o where the first hour is normal score-o, punch all you can, and the last hour (or something) you start picking up controls. Lots of points for each bag. It's not new terrain or control sites, or even an actual competitive course, just another couple hours of O.
8 of us have arrived in Aptos!!! Sandra, Marc, Christoph, Viktoria, Anna, Vlad, John, Belle.
We already went on a sunset run along the beach...!
Is anyone from the group flying in or out of San Diego for Anza-Borrego?
We are updating the
website with a brief summary of the exercises we do (look under "Reports"). Most everyone also keeps a more detailed account in her/his AP log.
