From the JWOC web page - Extra incentive NOT to cross fences into out of bounds areas.....

With the lions watching keenly in the background and eyeing the control flags with interest, JWOC2007 Marketing Manager Paul Prudhoe and Western Plains Zoo's Life Sciences Manager Maria Finnigan announced that the Western Plains Zoo would be the venue for the 2007 JWOC Sprint Distance event.

Maria commented that it was extremely exciting for the zoo to be used as the venue for the sprint distance event and that both the zoo and the wider Dubbo community welcomed the international exposure that the JWOC event would bring.

The zoo will be kept open for normal business during the race with no part of the orienteering course crossing animal enclosures or entering restricted access areas.

We realised that the normal visitor's fear of snakes, spiders and crocodiles needed a little augmentation for a major international event.

Ah, there's nothing to worry about ... just don't pick up 'lizards'.

Allright, that picture has got me convinced :)

I`m surprised that they are using a zoo for the sprint. It`s a good area and everything but I would think that the zoo crew wouldn`t want it because it may bother the animals.

No more than a bunch of 4 year olds making faces and throwing candy at the animals... probably less so, actually.

The Dubbo zoo is an opens plain zoo, meaning the animals are generally in large open paddocks and some distance from the people. I think the orienteers will simply blend in with the crowd. Maybe the fast movement will attract the attention of the bigger predators?

The Auckland Zoo was used as a sprint venue for a Australia/New Zealand test match earlier this year in June. This was one of the best sprint terrains that I have run on, and was well supported by the zoo. Members of the public on small walkways were more of a hazard than any of the animals!

A regular zoorientering is organized (since 2001) as a seasons end sprint in Borås Djurpark in Sweden.
One of the controls is usually hung on one of the mini-trains moving around the zoo...

In 2004 one of the sprints in Elitserien was held in Kolmårdens Djurpark - a famous zoo - the day before Tiomila. I walked around my own course and took pictures of among other things wolves (varg) howling at passing runners...

Will Troysie be there to admire the monkeys?
