Discussion: Salt use

I suspect the hospital and senior center use salt of one kind or another. I'm happy they're doing so.
There were a few places that not only weren't using salt or sand, they also weren't using shovels or snowblowers. Just counting on pedestrians to pack it down. Made for a nice variety in running surfaces, though I don' think that was their intent.
In these parts the town has given up on salt and sand mix, and is putting down a green de-icer on the roads. Pretty effective, and way less messy. I suppose there are other reasons to bemoan it, though. Not sure what sort of toxicity may be involved. That salt and sand mix was a real drag. Most of it eventually runs off, and the river and stream bottoms around here are choked with it. I have successfully (so far) laid off any salt or sand, just relying on plowing and not being too wound up about people coming up the driveway without 4WD or AWD. If we run low on heating oil I'll consider my options. I have had my little FWD Acura stashed in the barn the last few weeks.
