Good to see the IOF looking to have major events overseas, but I do have my doubts about how many countries will be committed to sending teams... Unfortunately the World Cup doesn't mean as much anymore now that there are World Champs every year.

January is high summer in New Zealand.

There was talk at the OA conference last year about the possibility of trying to get a round in Oz around the same time but i think it was decided that OA would not make any moves but rather leave it to any keens state associations.

Just in case people aren't sure, it is also summer in Australia then.

99.9% of IOF events are overseas from some perspectives Candyman.

i think he literally means overseas or oceans to countries outside of nor/swe/fin/sui etc

Maybe NZ promised to air con the whole forest, give the maps to third countries and paid a shitload of bribes?

I think the point about January is that it's the middle of the base training period for most European orienteers, making it an unlikely time of year for them to try peaking.

But also a good time of the year to get away from snow and ice for a bit of more inspiring training and racing. BTW, wouldn't European summer be in the middle of the base training period for NZ and Oz based orienteers?

For Australians summer tends to be the base training period. Most of the major domestic competitions are in autumn or spring.

why bastard, wherefore base?

Bubo, I agree about escaping the snow and ice. It's a shame ryanair don't fly to NZ... Portugal o meeting would be way cheaper, and judging by this year, has a higher standard!

P.s., Thanks for the geography lesson Una!

Brilliant to see a WC going out of Europe again, but definitely strange by the IOF to expect the Europeans to flock to the far corner of the World in the off-season.

I heard that to win the overall WC you will have to compete in NZ. This will give at keast halve a dozend participants from Europe ;-).

The annual OA conference was held over the weekend, it seems that OA is supporting a bid from Tassie Orienteering for World Cups in 2015.

All the Kiwis I've spoken to are really excited to have the opportunity to host a World Cup event, and to showcase our terrain to northern hemisphere orienteers. Sounds like a few of you won't bother coming for one reason or another, which will be a pity. Sure, its a long way, but spare a thought for us and the Aussies, who every year make the trip in reverse without the beneficial exchange rates. For those of you who do make the effort, I hope you have time to travel a little - NZ is a beautiful place with a huge variety of terrain for training. It'll make for a great 'winter' training mission. I expect Tasmania will be equally worth the effort, so good luck to them.

The World Cup was originally designed to promote and grow the sport internationally. Canada had three World Cup races ('86, '90, '92) leading up to the US WOC in '93. Great opp to have the World's best here. Since that time there has been no WC or WOC races in North America and for whatever reason the PWT never made a go at it in NA either. Was that because of the cost to do the races or that there was no opp? So it is great to see the NZ WC coming on line but will the new focus on an annual WOC make it harder for B countries to attend? I was a big fan of the WOC in odd years and the WC in even years model. Nevertheless If money permits it would be great to see one round of WC races rotating between the non Euro countries. I'm hopeful that the NZ WC is a success and that allows the WC to go back to the way it was originally intended.

It's good to see the europeon cup going global again :-)
While it's great that the IOF is going to outside europe it's a disgrace that the last time a world cup event was held outside europe was 2005, as part of world champs. By 2013 it will be 13 years since a proper round was held in the noneurope world.

It will be intresting too see how many runners turn up from the northern hemisphere attend. I think a several will go, as a few have been out there in recent years training at that time anyway.

Euro cup? More like Nordic + SUI cup...

It'd be great to have races in NZL & AUS, CRO & SLO, USA & CAN, but the IOF simply do not care about putting on good orienteering events for orienteers. All they want is money. They get more money with WOC every-year, and NOR, SWE, FIN and SUI are the only countries who can afford to put on races all the time with the IOF fee.
