Sad to hear that work is getting you down, it does sound pretty terrible. I hope your job search goes well, afraid I can't really help as have no idea what people do outside of science, if Rob is interested in financial modelling/programming then Tim would be happy to tell him more about what kind of things they do. Glad you had a fun trip to NY to take your mind off it and really looking forward to seeing you soon :)

If you're that unhappy with your work, then it's time to get out. I really hated my first job & being stuck in (greater) London without transport. In my case I felt out of my depth as I was doing all theory, when I'd been told that the job was more practical physics, with computing. I couldn't afford to live anywhere nice & I was depressed. I survived by getting out & doing nice things at the weekend & looked around for another job. I found the one with Tessella & moved back to Oxford & haven't looked back since. Once I'd got the job & knew I was getting out, it became easier to bear & once I was out I was a LOT happier. So hang in there while you find a new job, keep up the exercise & orienteering (as it's keeping you sane), but get looking.

Remember you've got friends & family who care about you & are willing to help.
