If you can get WCVB channel 5 from Boston, MA, their Chronicle Magazine will have a segment on orienttering Wednesday, 7:30pm, which was filmed at Mt Misery in late July. They shot footage of myself, Samantha and Hillary, Ken Walker Jr , Kristen, Bridgette and Ethan Hall and Stephen and Rachel Koehler.
I hope it shows well.

I hope someone tapes it. It would be fun to watch sometime. Many/most radio stations can be listened to online, but I'm guessing that's not true of TV stations yet.

Here's the detail page for that show, unfortunately it doesn't look like they provide video footage, nor that much online information for that matter. Other than the video footage (which hopefully someone tapes) the only thing they have O wise is a link to USOF - buried at the bottom of a list of geocaching, letterboxing and other 'treasure hunt' references.

The link they have to 4orienteering is pretty bad....

I forgot this thread, but I accidentally tuned into Chronicle -- they were showing letterboxing, which was something I had heard of but didn't know much about, so I stuck around. From there it segued to geocaching and I started thinking -- maybe they'll also feature orienteering? But then they covered alternate reality games. But I stuck with it anyway, and sure enough, the next thing I saw was Kenny running through the woods, then Saegers & more. I thought it was an excellent segment, but all too brief. Then they had a brief bit on "parcours" which is evidently treating your surroundings as one big obstacle course -- it involved a lot of vaulting over things. Finally, they had a letterbox segment which took us to the outdoor train set at Upton Town Forest (which I don't think they mentioned).

I saw the segment by accident, and enjoyed it very much. Given the brief time allotted, it was good to see it devoted to action with a some interpretation by Samantha & Jeff. Sorry there was little or no time to see a course laid out on a map, describe route choice and other skills, training, staggered starts, the variety of terrain and distances, etc.

I remember a train set at Needham Town Forest but don't recall it being as elaborate as the one on the show. The letterboxing and geocaching fit in OK with the orienteering, but the alternate reality games didn't click.

That train set up, and the mini bird houses, are in Needham, but I suspect they don't want to spread that around. I was always amazed how it seemed to escape any vandalism, it's so fragile looking. I intentionally left it off the O map.
Everyone at the taping seemed to get some air time, but it was only 1:50.

so much for my memory ... i knew the train set was just off some local map ...

We saw it, though we had to go to our neighbors' since we don't have a TV, and the dad was annoyed that we came at homework time. It was great! Thanks for doing it!
