I remember a few years ago reading in the ONA about the end-of-year award for USA's orienteer of the year and maybe team of the year. I recall that being a cool thing. Does it still exist? If not, time to resurrect it?

How about making it OUSA best navigator of the year award. Then you'll have person who can be referred as The best navigator in the USA. Then sell that person to team sponsor, satnav companies might like to have USA's best navigator at a expo to tell how he/she uses sponsor's gear.

A parallel idea would be to bestow an honorary "Navigator of the Year" award to someone well known, that would both reflect an accomplishment (like ballooning around the world, getting to the South Pole, finding Atlantis, etc) and be an opportunity to have the media associate orienteering with navigation.
