Take a pen, plan a course... if you aint wearing a number, then it's training!
I'm with you - especially since most local score events seem to be the result of course setter not wanting to put in the effort to set 'real' courses. I like the challenge of execution far more than the challenge of planning, and drawing a line between the controls just isn't the same as the course setter vs. runner scenario that you usually get. Boo, hiss score events.
I do like Mark's idea though as a compromise - I'm desperate to get back into the woods! But yes, you've hit the nail on the head - definitely execution versus planning.
Hey! Complain to the organizer. They'll listen to ideas. But both have always been able to put together novel events and expect nothing less this round.
My club in Finland has training events every Monday. You get an all controls map and there are 7 recommend courses. You fill in a slip, take it to start, have your start time put on it, put it in map-bag and hand it in at finish. Planner does have to make some courses, but you don't have to guess how many people will turn up. HS get about 500 people to these events, closer to 1000 near Jukola time. They use emit, so you don't have to asign a course before you start because the computer works it out from your splits. Simples.
Walk, don't feel like I can complain properly when I'm not one of the people out there planning the event. I thought about it but without a car and knowledge of the areas I'm a bit stuck. When is the spring schedule decided? I will give it a go then regardless!
