Discussion: How to remove a midsole stud on Jalas?

Any tips on how to remove the mid sole stud on my Jalas? They have been a source of metatarsalgia (sore bottom of the third bone in my forefoot) when I end up on a hard surfaces for too long. I tried ripping them out (no go). I then sawed the rubber cleat in three directions around the stud but it still will not come out. Is there some sort of screw from the insole that holds it secure?

Thanks,

p.s. I note that Inov-8 of the UK makes an Oroc model that does not have a metal stud in the mid foot position. Anyone have experience with this brand which is not retailed in N.A.?

after sawing the rubber cleat from 3 directions, would it not be as easy to remove the cleat and the spike?

I considered that however the stud seems to be attached deeper into the shoe and I wonder if I did that if I would end up with a hole in the shoe.

I will see what I can do with my shoes as I won't run in them again without that spike removed. I'm in trail runners for the time being.

Ok, I just got rid of the central spikes on my shoes. I used an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel to chop off the spike (a hack-saw would probably work too). The tip of the spike is carbide, but the lower portion seems to be normal steel - it cut without any difficulty. I was then able to pry out the remnant piece of spike with a screw-driver. I filled the holes with Shoe Goo to finish it off. Photos sent by email.

Brian, thanks for the great pictures of the surgical procedure. The question is does the hole go very deep into the mid layers of the shoe or more of a superficial bit? You have inspired me to persist and to hack away at these midsole anathemas.

The hole goes through the outer rubber sole into the mid-sole (foam part). I filled it with Shoe-Goo to keep water from going into the mid-sole.

Hmmm. I had no trouble getting rid of my Jalas studs, just by orienteering on them. From memory the base of the stud is under the entire rubber outsole layer and is significantly wider than the rest of it (so it doesn't fall out as soon as there is wear around the tip) You'd need to make a pretty big hole in hte top to pull it out that way.

I've got some Oroc 280s and really like them. I think they will be available in N.America but not sure where...

I've got a pair as well. They are awesome. Here are some UK retailers:

Pete Bland regularly does international orders, £20 for US and Canada, so £110 for a pair of ORoc 280's right now. Considering it cost us over here £100 in the shop, that is a bargain. Thrown in at the moment too, a free pair of PB lite socks (although i'm not sure if they are extra postage or not)

Whats nice about the Oroc 280s?

Similar to the Inov8 X Talons?

Alex M:
The Inov8 ORocs have metal spikes, whereas the X Talons don't, the shoes are probably pretty similar, but i have not been able to wear both, so cannot give a good comparison. The ORocs have been designed for orienteering specifically, so they will differ slightly in feel and will probably be more robust.

Are there any Inov8's sized for wide feet?
Jun 29, 2010 11:05 AM #
Alex M:
They sell different footbeds that will adjust the position of the foot in the shoe, so the fit will change, but this will not work if your foot is too wide, from what i have seen, there are no shoes with a wide or narrow model available.

Walsh do wide versions of the PB Elite, called the PB Ultra.

I got a pair of Oroc 280s from the US Inov8 warehouse last week, so they have definitely arrived in the country. I don't know when they will be available through US retailers, though I would try Scarborough. Keep an eye on zappos.com, as that's probably the easiest way to get a pair of Inov8's in the US.
