| bbrooke: | My favorite: club soda with a splash (or more) of cranberry juice and a squeeze of lime. It's a little sweet, and fizzy, and (I think) less toxic than a soda or diet soda... |

| szurcher: | Bubbly water :-) |

| jjcote: | Moonshine. |

| Cristina: | Well, clearly water is the best alternative, but I'm not sure how many more liters of water I can drink per day. I mean, I live in Arizona and I run around and sweat a lot. Even with a few ddps in a day I'm still drinking enough water to fill a fishtank. It's nice to have a 'treat' every once in a while to break things up. I just strongly dislike the fact that my current 'treat' is bordering on toxic...
J-J, if I replaced ddp with moonshine one-for-one, I wouldn't be around very long. ;-) |

| walk: | Lyn suggests tea, with milk. And you're even allowed a cookie. |

| bbrooke: | Here's another non-toxic alternative (Izze Fortified -- sparkling water & fruit juice, no sugar or fake sweeteners added). Easier than making your own cranberry & soda cocktail...

| coach: | From the expert on lo cal drinks, Hillary.. half OJ/half water. I think PG uses this also. |
| # Posted 2010-02-07 08:22:46 | |
| JanetT: | You can even buy half OJ/half water (but I'm not sure why you'd want to) -- Trop50. [You'd pay for the filtered water that reduces the sugar and calories.] |

| Cristina: | Half OJ/half water sounds just fine to drink, but it's still >> 0. I think I need to continue my experiment to see if I get past the desire to drink things that aren't water. At work, the "sweet" alternative is part of my coping mechanism, so clearly the easiest solution is to stay away from work. ;-) |

| iansmith: | I have had some success with "flavor packets," e.g. these from Propel. I find that a packet prescribed for a half liter tastes fine with a full liter. The caloric content is small - 10 calories per liter - and some of the brands, like gatorade contain electrolytes in small quantities. I started using these packets to encourage myself to drink more water (as opposed to soda) - I find alternating liters of water and liters of flavor packet'd water at work prompts me to drink more. |

| Bash: | Fruit-flavoured herbal tea, made hot, then chilled if desired.
Fyi, my husband the dentist says that everyone should drink their OJ mixed 50/50 with water. Full-strength juice is hard on the teeth. A lot of parents have been horrified to discover the damage that they've inadvertently inflicted on their children's teeth by giving them a supposedly healthy drink - especially when they're at the age when they take forever to sip on a drink. |

| Sandy: | Have you tried flavored seltzer water? Somehow the fizziness helps satisfy the sugar (or sweetener) craving for me. |

| Cristina: | Well, lots of interesting ideas here. Maybe I'll try some at work next week... |

| jingo6390: | I like True Lemon mixed in water as an alternative to plain water. You can also get True Lime and True Orange. |

| peggyd: | Iced tea! You can buy decaf unsweetened instant mix if you want decaf. When I went cold turkey off Diet Coke, I replaced it with tea. Water with dinner at home, mostly. |

| Cristina: | Here's an update:
- Today I tried some packets of Emergen-C that I had at home. Fizzy and tangerine flavored. No better than water. - Tea doesn't do it for me - Fizziness doesn't seem to do it for me - Vitamin water doesn't satisfy the craving - Neither does Propel I have observed that I don't have cravings for random sweet drinks. Water is just as satisfying as any of the non-diet soda alternative. I also don't have cravings for regular soda. When I see someone drinking a *diet* soda I have a strong desire to have one, too. This leads me to conclude that aspartame = crack. |
| # Posted 2010-02-10 06:25:35 | |
| unpronunciation: | then clearly a crack pipe is a viable solution to the diet soda issue. |
| # Posted 2010-02-10 07:50:44 | |
| Cristina: | It would also be a solution to the employment problem. |

| jjcote: | I'm sticking with my moonshine recommendation. Assuming you can't get your hands on a ready supply of khat. |
| # Posted 2010-02-10 08:57:38 | |
| Cristina: | I can't even grow tomatoes successfully, think I could manage khat? |
| # Posted 2010-02-10 20:06:01 | |
| jjcote: | But you have cats. Cat, khat, whatever. |
