Discussion: 1978 Junior Training Camp - Who's That?

in: Orienteering; General

Long before there was a ‘Sass Peepre Junior Training Camp,’ the COF held a very well-attended training camp for juniors at Lac Phillippe, north of Ottawa. The camp was a success as a number of the participants went on to win multiple Canadian and North American titles. However, many have since disappeared from orienteering.
So here is the contest of the week: 1) Who is the Attack Pointer sitting in front of everyone else?
2) Name as many of the other persons pictured as you can. With a deadline of February 10th, I will donate $1 Cdn to Attack Point for every person that is correctly identified as being in the photo.

What a grimace! He'd rather be training!

Denise Demonte back row far right and Ron Lowry in front of her

Just a guess that the one in the very front is Mike Waddington and another guess that Ted de St. Croix is the one in the middle of the second row with just his head showing.

GuyO:
Back row, left-most: Ross Burnett

Sandy:
Front row, right end sitting - Pam James?
Feb 3, 2010 9:03 PM #
Hammer:
back row leftmost: Kevin Jones, 4 from left Knut Nord (Sweden), 5 from left Glen Geddes

right of Ron is Marg Ellis, left of Barb is Susan Budge (still youngest ever WOC competitor??)

left of Ted is Bill Anderson??

yeah front row guy would rather be training and he's showing off the start of his patented grimace

I guess I can chip in with a few more names:

In the back on the right hand side just in front of the window are Egon Goldschmidt and Marg Ellis, just in front of them to the left would be Susan Budge and Gloria Rankin.
Back row in striped shirt Megan Piercy (?) and in front of her Andy de St.Croix.
Front row with Avesta shirt, Judy (?) Adams and I think the man on the extreme right is Mike Day Sr and the young boy to his left Mike Day Jr.

In the back standing beside Knut Nord, Scott Robertson.

PS. Just noticed that Marg and Susan were mentioned by Mike already, but the others still count...

Yikes, this could get expensive. But good going you all. I will make up a composite list so that Hammer can attach it to the photo. I don't think the Pam James guess is correct. Yes, the Avesta girl is an Adams but not Judy.
Not that it counts but the guy behind the camera was me. I never thought to record all the names. As with many of my old photos I sure wish I had done so.
Leif, great to hear from you. It's not Scott back there with Knut but no problem GuyO nailed it.

OK - I wasn´t sure of the "Judy part" (I guess that´s the mother) so what is her name? Sounds like the others (except Scott) were correct though...

Some additional names - pure guesses this time: To the left of Denise could be Nick de St.Croix and sitting to the right of Mike W could be Lorna Lowery?

PS. Those were the years when I spent most of my summers travelling and orienteering in Canada so I have a lot of fond memories and friends from then. Actually 1978 is one of the few years between 1975 and 1985 that I didn´t visit Canada.

Good on you, Bubo. Not only did you recognize Lorna Lowery you know the spelling of her last name was different from Ron Lowry, her clubmate.
Judy is the mother Adams. Someone must know Mark's sister's name. By the way is Mark in the photo?
We're right on 50%. We have 17 1/2 of the 35 names correct. Ottawa APers may be able to pick out two more, old time Ontarians two or three more but if Colin Kirk gets ahold of the photo there goes my beer money.

Gail Adams

gordhun:
Yes, Gail.
From a 1978 edition of Orienteering Canada "Mike Waddington, 10, of Hamilton when asked about the (follow up) exercise said he liked it but his instructor was sweating so much that "when he came close he rained on me."
(I'm sorry but even then the kid was hard to catch.)

Hey Gord, I think that's John Bols in the back row (3rd from left) with Ron Greene 5th from left. I too think that's Scott Robertson in the back row with Knut. Lilo Goldschmidt is between Mike Day and Egon. I think the girl in glasses next to Andy is Kevin's sister. And could that be Deb Hine in glasses in front of me? The fellow next to Gail sorta looks like Mark but I am not sure. Takes you back eh?

A couple more of hammer from that era:

http://macmullan.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=cor...

I can't remember what the meets were:
West Point, 1979?
Canadian 6-Day, 1978?

And that's Rusty Fish on the top right, with the Fish Mobile far left. Sweet ride.

gordhun:
That would be West Point - Camp Buckner - in the top one and very likely the 1978 six day in the bottom one as all the t-shirts in the background are Canadian and the newest looking one is from the 6 day.

Wow - I hardly reognize anyone. Knut Nord, Susan Budge, Ron and Denise, That's about it. I was not there.

bubo:
I guess that verifies that we were correct about Scott after all...

gordhun:
Yes, bubo. With billa's help above we are up tp 23 identified by AP. I know five more but that leaves eight that even if someone identified them I wouldn't be sure. Mark Adams should be able to tell us who is sitting next to Gail. I think that guy was there because of her.

Pat de St Croix was often mistaking me for Scott R......

Time's up. The final total is 23 campers identified. I will make a $23 Cdn donation to Attack Point in recognition of your help. The shocking realization for me is that very few of those young orienteers are still with the sport. I hope we do better in the future because the main reason I see for investing in our junior and national teams is that it widens the pool of leaders for the future. Some of the leaders of that 1978 camp - Bill Anderson, Gloria Rankin, Marg Ellis - are still among the people you can count on today. Of the five campers who later participated on Canada's national team only one of them has been seen at an event in the last two decades.

The little guy I suppose?

Secret recipe:
1) Pick the right parents
2) Start early
3) Move to Norway

If you include Ted in this number I guess you could say that he´s actually been active in the last 20 years - much of that in Sweden though, since he spent the latter part of the 90-ies there. After moving back to Canada I guess he´s not been very active on the national scene. (Recipe a bit the same as above, but "Move to Norway" substituted by travel to Europe a lot).

OOPS! that should be two - Ted and the little guy. I won't say which one I forgot as the little guy's feelings might get hurt.
Thanks Leif errr Bubo.

4) join an active club

(no hurt feelings).
