Even if you're not getting a shipping allowance, most airlines let you bring a bike as part of the standard allowance. I think. I brought mine for no extra charge, and glad of it.

Really? Well that might be with it. Does yours fold in a special way or anything?

Nope, it's an SGB-sized standard frame with 28" wheels. You'd need to:

  1. Acquire a bicycle bag or bicycle box. Try eBay, or fluttering your eyelids at the hunk in the local bike shop. Bikes are delivered in boxes and the surplus boxes are then thrown away. If you're short of time, pay said hunk to complete steps 2-5.

  2. Detach wheels from bicycle.

  3. Deflate tyres. This is very important unless you want to be arrested on arrival because something went boom in the (partially) depressurised hold.

  4. You may need to remove saddle and handlebars, depending on the size of the bike.

  5. Pack things around the bicycle to stop it bouncing around when thrown off the 'plane. Bubble wrap, newspaper, fleeces, thermals, anything. If the airline asks, it's not 'clothing', it's 'padding'.

  6. Be prepared for the fact that you'll be dragging something the size of a small coffin around Heathrow. Then, worse, Logan/JFK.

So the ice axe was "padding" then :)
