The stabbing actually took place in yuppy Yarraville and the poor fellow managed to cross Somerville Road and into the Hungry Jack's which is in Kingsville. Footscray West is further north across Geelong Road. And we were running in Maidstone and Tottenham which is further again to the north-west. So it is stretching it a bit to claim proximity to the area of the assault. Yarraville is managing to avoid the adverse publicity associated with the incident, with Foostrcray picking up the tab. I didn't see any syringes at the event area and wouldn't have expected many as the park in question is not particularly close to public transport or a railway station. The worst event I've attended for syringes started at a frequently used station car park. Yep, you guessed it - Yarraville.

Looks like the map was about 1.5km away from the murder scene at its closest point. There were definitely syringes - I almost parked on top of some - this surprised me as it didn't seem to me like a particularly obvious shooting-up spot, either.

Just to show that the western suburbs don't have a monopoly on dodgy street-O areas, we once turned up at West Heidelberg to find a recently burnt-out car wreck in the car park.

A historical footnote is that the creek that runs through Cruickshank Reserve was once known as Murderer's Creek as a result of an incident in 1842. Unusually for such placenames in Australia, the alleged perpetrator was not Aboriginal (although that probably didn't stop the local vigilantes from killing a few Aboriginals in revenge anyway).

On this mornings ABC Yarraville was named as the location. Not the best spot for a night-O?

Today's Age is now nominating the Cruickshank Park area as Yarraville.
My Kingsville map includes the residential area which is West Footscray from the Geelong Road north to the railway line.

I don't think there would be much enthusiasm for a night event on the Kingsville map right now.
I've expressed my concerns about some of the night maps. e.g. Ascot Vale. I pointed out that I run very fast through that area because of the history of some of its residents. However the same comment could also be made about certain areas of Brighton, South Yarra, Templestowe, Doncaster, Essendon, ...

As Blair earlier noted, street orienteers do perform a certain public service by bringing crowds of "general public" into normally quiet areas which might otherwise be the haunt of those keeping out of the public eye.

Crime in Templestowe can take different forms. Some readers will recall the case of the Coles executive who did some time for embezzling something like $6 million from the company and put it into house renovations. I was setting a street event on Ruffeys Creek a few weeks later and put a control just down from the house concerned (not that there was anything particularly obvious from the street as to where the $6 million had gone).

We have our own areas in bendigo that don't seem all that savoury, even for daytime orienteering. Jobs Gully is the map. I have purposefully avoided some control locations as I thought certain club members wouldn't go up a certain dead end street there.
