MJC told me a tip that Carl had told her, and it seems to ring true: most often when we stop to look for a control in the wrong place, we've stopped early, rather than gone too far. Seems like we think we *should* have gone far enough and we better start looking around.
Pace counting is just one way to prevent stopping early; knowing it's more likely is helpful, too.
Yep, pace counting would be a great addition to my skills (but another distraction). I've taken (when I remember) to glancing at my watch and estimating distance traveled based on time (i.e., if I've taken 3 minutes I've traveled about xxx meters, or whatever). For some reason, although I thought about it beforehand, I wasn't actually doing that at the meet.
But I enjoyed the opportunity to test myself on this terrain. Great fun!
