TheInvisibleLog:
The Ord extension was all the rage two years ago. As far as I could work out, the only businesses expanding on the existing Ord Scheme area were MIS sandalwood plantations. I visited one farm who made his money by selling button squash to perth. It was a profitable nice, because there was a small window of production when no-one else could compete. Any other time of the year freight costs would kill the enterprise. And it was pretty clear this was a good niche for one farm. And that crop was grown on a very small area of the farm. The rest was.. well, unused. The much touted mango industry seemed to be surviving on selling to the grey nomads. If the sandalwood wasn't there, I gained the impression there wouldn't be much at all around.
Of course, now that the MIS industry has collapsed, it makes a lot of sense to extend the Ord scheme. Bruce Davidson would be deeply excited, I'm sure.
