Swampfox: Just a quick note about the PNWOC Gold Rush hosted over the weekend by CTOC on terrain just outside of Idaho City (about 30 minutes NE of Boise, in the mountains.)

Overall it was quite a nice weekend. Saturday's Middle distance races went in some terrific alluvial gold mining terrain rich in details related to the mining--ditches, areas of intricate, sharp, deep gullies, knolls and dot knolls from the tailings, etc.

Quite a special area and nothing like this has been mapped before that I am aware of in the US. The map was excellent--and it would not have been an easy job!

The forest was largely wide open with runnability mostly limited by how well you could cope with running up and down some of the steeper areas. Fast, accurate map reading was critical given the complex nature of the terrain and the high number of short to medium length legs. It was pretty much precision orienteering the whole way round.

Sunday's Classic distance races were in adjoining terrain (all part of the same map) but above the gold mining areas and so it made for a totally different experience. The terrain was simpler, "big" spur/gully granite terrain with almost no rock features, and with a fairly good trail net. The forest was wide open ponderosa pine with many scattered, clumps of denser bushes (mapped with darker greens). Much more emphasis on route choice and pushing up the running speeds as much as you could. It was fast and fun.

Much credit to CTOC for some outstanding orienteering!

kupackman: I think I would have found six gold nuggets in quicker time than I found the first six controls on Saturday... (my shoes have a little more sparkle in them now)

Good job CTOC!

Geoman: This shows what a small club with skilled and dedicated people can do. Thanks CTOC for your vision for putting on an A-meet in this outstanding terrain. It was a great weekend.

JanetT: Thanks to CTOC for a great series of races, from the sprint on the Boise State campus to the races near Idaho City. Super maps and good organization.

Question -- the PNWOF home page links to the Results page and says results are posted, but as of Tues evening it still says "results after the meet"... ??

Cristina: They're all posted here. Page refresh?

Geoman: Any chance to get the results posted on Winsplits and/or Route Gadget?

Cristina: I would also really appreciate RG and/or Winsplits for the weekend events. That way we can all relive our adventures on the middle distance over and over again. ;-)

Orion4ik: Are we going to see any results from WRE? or at least some comments???

#  Posted 2009-06-30 08:13:21
AZ: The results of the WRE are on the IOF website:

Comments? Super fun race in great terrain. Winning times too long (if you care about such things). Notice how the mens' results are dominated by Scandis - a clear indication of the terrain type: rocky, detailed, and thick ;-)

This was a super fun race, I must say again.

Nikolay: I don't know about that. More or less the same scandinavians were dominating the results in the past 2 weeks.

AZ: Sorry, I was being flippant - a mis-placed smiley. I was actually trying to make a small joke based on bad logic.
