Finland Squirms as Its Latest Export Steps into Spotlight

by Dan Bilefsky

They have eight-foot retractable latex Satan wings, sing hits like "Chainsaw Buffet" and blow up slabs of smoking meat on stage. So members of the band Lordi expected a reaction when they beat a crooner of love ballads to represent Finland at the Eurovision song contest in Athens, the competition that was the springboard for Abba and Celine Dion.

But the heavy-metal monster band did not imagine a national identity crisis.

...

"In Finland, we have no Eiffel Tower, few real famous artists, it is freezing cold and we suffer from low self-esteem," said Mr. Putaansuu, who, as Lordi, has horns protruding from his forehead and sports long black fingernails.

Oh boy, I wonder if the organizers can book them for WMOC 2007. Would make for a pleasant way to relax after the sauna after the day of competition. Of course if they win Eurovision they might be priced way too high.

the only Finnish metal band I know is "Nightwish", (symphonic black metal, same space as "The Gathering", if you're interested). I have one of their albums, which sounds like a bizarre fusion of opera and eurometal. Its ok, but I wouldn't rush out and get it, and it rarely makes the cut for pre-race listening.

What happens if you listen to Yanni before racing? And if you haven't, could you try it?

What happened to that Finnish hip-hop band from around 2001, I can't remember their name, but they sounded surprisingly good for Finns rapping. They had a huge MTV Europe hit, before being crushed by Kylie and others. Freestyler maybe?

And I guess that's all. I believe you can not know any other Finnish artists.

Well, if we leave this subgenre behind, there are plenty of Finnish classical musicians - Kaija Saariaho and Einojuhani Rautavaara the composers, Esa-Pekka Salonen the conductor, the two violinist Kuusisto brothers, ... not to mention older (dead) guys like Sibelius.

There are some other Finnish artists: Pepe Deluxe (who did the Twisted Levi's ad music) and Sweatmaster, who wrote the brilliantly-entitled 'I Am A Demon And I Love Rock & Roll', which, despite the name, wasn't actually all that bad.

I'm sad, aren't I....?!

Quite a convincing margin of victory, and the interview is pretty cool. Particularly satisfying since there was reportedly a movement afoot to ban them from the competition.

We'll all be wearing masks soon, and you'll see a lot of dressed up monsters heading out on first leg of Jukola this year. Reportedly the Finnish WOC-team will be wearing stud belts.

One of the risks of orienteering is developing a deeper respect for the Nordic cultures. After a trip to the Finn5 several years ago, I started dating a Finn woman...and now we're engaged! What's worse, I'm even starting to enjoy their music.....! <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LgJYCK-6hE> for the Lordi winning performance.

There is a big rock concert overlapping with the Fin5 this year, so I eagerly checked the list of performers for Lordi. Noooooooo, they aren't coming!
