When orienteering at night I use my NiteRider Digital 6 with a head strap and mount. For the battery I let the wire hang down under my shirt so trees don't pull it loose and use a padded single water bottle holder to hold the battery. It's very bright and adjustable, probably like your bike light.
There are some Swedish or at least Scandanavian models designed for night orienteering that probably have a wider throw. Mike Eglinski (Spike) could tell you about them. I think he uses a high powered
Silva version.
I've used the LED's on ocassion. They work adequately but are not perfect. I've used them on dirt trails in the woods but sometimes am fooled by the dim. Despite 4 vs. 3 LED's, I didn't see much difference except weight between the Black Diamond Moonlight and the Petzl Tikka LED Headlamp. I use the Petzl as a backup light for my NiteRider when doing Night-O.
Most of the time I don't use anything. I just stay places where a car doesn't have to see me. I find that my eyes adjust to the dark enough to see (even on a dark night) on trails like the Rock Creek Trail and CCT. They are wide and smooth enough. Ocassionally a car will blind me like this and you do need to watch for debris like fallen branches, dips in the trails, tree roots, etc... If you run the trails enough you'll remember where they are at. It's only in the darkest parts that I feel uncomfortable and will sometimes take a light and use it just for that.
