JLaughlin:
Does anyone know the number of participants off the top of their head?

Just under 2000 at Veterans' World Champs, 1997, in Minnesota. Definitely between 1900 and 2000.

Thanks!

What about a meet without a world champs?

Sandy:
We had 544 actual starts at the 2000 US Champs (about 20-25 more total registrations); I think QOC had more at their recent US Champs. I don't have exact numbers, but I've been told that there were 700+ at a DVOA event (maybe US Champs again but not sure) sometime in the 1980's. Our recent Interscholastics had about 450.

Sandy--I think you are referring to the 1982 US Championships at French Creek West, where they say there were 700+ participants (or maybe that was 7000+). Who knows?

Sandy - DVOA's first A-meet at Hickory Run, 1988 maybe? World Ranking Event (or whatever they were called then) and North American Champs?

NTOA's annual Red River Ramble B meet used to attract 600+, I've been told, back in the late 80s/early 90s. Would have to check with the Snells to see if anyone knows for sure.

Dave Linthicum's annual Boy Scout event used to attract 700-800 participants; at the time he claimed it was the largest o' event in the country.
Not a regular competitive o' event, though.

DVOA does a Mid Atlantic Scout Orienteering Champs the first saturday of May every year and I think that there has been as many 800 - 1000 scouts at some of these meets in the past, Ed Scott from DVOA would know for sure as it is his event.
