Not that I am pushing their mag but the Nov/Dec issue of adventure sports has photos of teams descending the gulley and A THREE PHOTO SERIES OF THE ACTUAL ROCK BEING DISLODGED AND STARTING DOWN.

It's worth a look and it's hard not to think about how you might have viewed the route and what the consequences might have been.

It's not up at the open content of their website but I sent them an email suggesting they put it online.

Yeah, I saw that too. I'm pretty sure that had they not already had their minds numbed from 2 days of racing they would have realized that descending in a line down a gully of loose boulders was not the best idea. The RD said he was surprised they took that route as safer alternatives existed. The wierd thing is that the two teams were together at the summit control and actually conferred on the best way off the mountain. Hard to believe that 1 of 8 people couldn't see what a bad choice it was. Don't get me wrong - I'm not blaming the victims here - just noting how far south your brain can go in these long races.
