Sorry for the late reply - Aboveground Storage Tank! Depending on the age, construction methods/materials, and the contents stored within, these guys can often be sources of contamination if poorly maintained. Underground Storage Tanks are also known in the remediation world as USTs. Fun Fun!

Could you tell if they had been having problems due to the area? Were the removing soil?

I'm pretty sure that they are drilling a natural gas well near by and they are using this spot as the location to house the drilling water, so the ASTs were newly put there and appear to be temporary.
