I think the fire started on the west edge of this map and raced through it before reaching homes. Will report more when we are allowed in there. But there are much more important issues to worry about obviously.

Hania doesn't have a mobile and clearly there's no point in ringing her home even if it's still standing. A bit of an embankment behind their house could have been a small protection - I just hope she & Quentin got themselves and the dogs out okay. She's been so paranoid since the fires there a few years ago that I imagine she would have evacuated early. I'll try emailing her work address tomorrow.

Just heard from Hania's father that their house survived (somehow). However, contrary to what I thought yesterday, it appears the fires did go through the Whitford's area and I haven't heard anything from them.

Yes, I'd worked out both those things too. (I think the fire came from the southern end of Grandview Drive and may have crossed the road before it got to the northern end where Hania and Quent are.) Shall I text Tarli?

Text and then post with news. Pls.

Whitfords also OK, and house survived but property significantly damaged.

Peta was running a coaching course at Templestowe, Saturday. So she may not have been home during the fire

I guess they have been in the area since Ash Wednesday so would have been pretty well prepared and their house is in the open, away from trees. Tarli descrbes the scenery as eerie and depressing.

My dad reports via Kathy Liley that Whitfords saved their own house. One of few left in Steels Creek with 5-10 people dead.

The news I didn't want to hear is that John Whittington's parents at Marysville are missing (didn't even know they were living there, but it must be awful for John and Miriam, especially since Miriam Palmer's parents were killed in an accident on the way home from Bendigo in 2004)

I spent some time yesterday posting as accurate info as I could on the OV website (http://www.vicorienteering.asn.au/) before it was posted here. Can I suggest if there is any further info on orienteers affected (or hopefully not affected) it be emailed to me (president@vicorienteering.asn.au) rather than posted here? That way it is available to a wider audience than those reading BT's log (OK I know everyone on AP reads BT but not all orienteers do!)

Jenny - I assume John Whittington is a SA orienteer? Can you give me any further info? Thanks Ian Dodd

jennycas:
Miriam Whittington is president of Orienteering Tasmania - she and John used to live in SA. (John's parents aren't orienteers.) The news is not confirmed but doesn't sound good.

I certainly think it is a good idea for any verified news to be passed on and posted on the OV website but I don't see why anybody should stop posting information here, particularly if it is anecdotal or commentary, i've really appreciated being able to pick up more personal messages and different types of information than what would ever be printed in a newspaper or posted on the OV website.

Sorry I didn't mean to suggest that you couldn't still post here

Unfortunately some bad news via the VOA website - Rob Davey, an occasional MTBO orienteer, perished along with his family at Kinglake.

Madeleine is in Benalla. Not sure where Robin is.

Buxton hasn't featured in the news but is within the broader fire area - I don't know whether the fire missed it or it just hasn't been noticed yet.

Uncle JiM:
From what I heard, Buxton missed the brunt of the fires
