Eric has hit the nail on the head as far as a clear cut having taken place. However, even prior to the clear cut the vegetation was pretty sparse -- maybe not the wide open spaces of Laramie or some manicured forests of Central Europe, but the runnability was definitely as good or better than the standard New England white forest.
I was going to leave my answer at that, but it occurred to me while I was dropping my car off for some repairs this morning that there is a better way to address this issue, and that is by using a technique well known to various aspects of American society much more popular than orienteering, for example, just to name a few off the top of my head, weight-loss advertisements, extreme home make-overs, and Air Force shock-and-awe bombing runs.
In addition, and I don't know if this is a common trait of Americans or not, but the mind does all sorts of strange things on the night before surgery, and at some point Gail saw what I was doing and laughed. But I was serious. I had no idea what the future held, and I wanted a record, just in case.
