We'll be using the Baymont Inn in Plymouth, WI for headquarters for the 2009 US Champs. Mention the US champs and you can get a group rate($79+tax). They only have 60 rooms, so it will probably fill up fast.

You can also get off season rates at the Victorian Village Inn in Elkhart Lake, WI for a few dollars more. Once again mention orienteering to get that rate. This place is condos that are pretty nice. They also have larger places if you're coming with a group. Check out their website for more info.

Both are about 15 minutes drive to the event.

If you call the number above for the Baymont Inn, they do not have the reservations available yet for Oct. If you call 877-229-6668, you can make the reservation, but the discounted rate of $79 is only valid for Saturday night, not Friday night.

Also mention Badger Orienteering, not US Champs.

BTW, what is the best airport to fly into?

MKE or Milwaukee. One extra hour to the south, O'Hare ORD might save a lot of $$, but than you have to think extra gas, tolls etc.

But with ORD, you have the advantage of visiting "the nation's last great city..."

...and taking the Barack Obama Tour.

So far as accommodations, another nice option in October is to make use of the extensive camping provided in the North Kettle Moraine Unit. I particularly like the remote backpack shelters, which may be reserved now. Most of the bugs and mosquitoes should be gone, but it wouldn't be impossible to have some light overnight snow.

The Ice Age Trail is a 1100-mile National Scenic Trail, completely within Wisconsin, that runs right through the middle of the orienteering area. It is a tremendous resource, as shown by an area trail map. The starts for the A-meet days will be near the third parking area north of Rte 67 on Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive.

A few updates on accomodations.....

Pricing. I will post again tomorrow to clarify pricing arrangements at the Victorian Village and the Baymont.

Also, there are rooms available at the Plymouth Inn for $65+12%tax. To get that rate you need a 2 night stay minimum and should mention the U.S. Orienteering Champs. You also need to cancel 1 week in advance, should you not be able to attend.

This will probably be the best rate you'll find in the area. They have 25 rooms available as of now. The Plymouth Inn is located in town, a few minutes from the Baymont Inn which is visible from the main highway.

For other accomodation options you can go to www.plymouthwisconsin.com

We'll have the official website up by the end of the month.

Clarification about accomodations for U.S. Champs 2009

1. The Baymont Inn(in Plymouth, WI) group rate is for Friday and Saturday nights. That is $79+12%. Say you are with the U.S. Orienteering Champs. I cleared that up with them today. Thanks for letting me know Evan.

This motel is where we will do checkin on Friday. It is conveniently located just off the highway and within a few miles of both the event site and the banquet. 62 rooms 1-920-893-6781 www.baymontinns.com

2. Victorian Village in Elkhart Lake, WI - They have many rooms with different rates from typical motel rooms(that are condos) to 1, 2 and 3 bedroom condos, some with views of the lake. You will get the off season rate even though it isn't off season. The cheapest rooms are the motel rooms which start at $85+12% and go up from there. These rooms are $180 in peak season. It is a little less convenient, but about the same distance to the event site and banquet(about 5 miles). 40 motel style rooms www.vicvill.com 1-877-860-9988

3. Plymouth Inn(in Plymouth) will give you a rate of $65+12%, but requires a 2 night stay, and you must give 1 week's notice if cancelling your reservation(as opposed to the usual 1 or 2 days). It is located a short drive from the Baymont in downtown Plymouth. 25 rooms www.plyinn.com(website wasn't working when I checked it out). 1-888-779-5623

I'm posting this information now because options in the area are limited and these motels typically don't block off rooms for events. If you wait until October to make your reservations, you may find the places are filled. Sheboygan has more motels, but is 20 miles from the event site. There are also more expensive options in the area.

Regarding the event, we should have a website up in the next few weeks with lots more information. I will post here when it goes online. For now I will just say it is my favorite place to orienteer.
