The USOF Board today voted to request that OCIN use the same point system for the 2006 relay champs as was used for the 2005 champs, which OCIN will do. And the Board and the sanctioning and rules folks will figure things out for future relays.

The Board also approved a bid from Quantico for the 2007 Classic Champs in October 2007.

The USOF Board of Directors has made the following resolution:
"It has been brought to the board's attention that the process for announcing the point structure and team composition is unclear and request OCIN to revert to the point system used last year."
OCIN will honor the board's request.

I am glad that there is a resolution on this matter.

I want to wish Mike and OCIN all the best as they prepare for this event and thank them for so many years of great events. It is great to be able to count on an event being offered year after year, particularly one that kicks of the season as Hammer pointed out. I even celebrated by 12th or 13th birthday at the Flying Pig back in the days when it was a (sometimes snowy) mid-march event.

Also, I hope that as an orienteering community we continue to take the risk to consider making changes that deviate from the past as long as we make those decisions early enough for people to adjust and anticipate the changes as they make their own plans. I don't have much of an opinion about this particular change but I do think it is important as an organaztion as a whole to be open to possibility and to trying different innovations in order to be sustainable. This should be done through whatever are the proper channels but I would hate for a future event organizer to be discouraged by these discussions to take on an event or to suggest a change.

To make it official:

At the recent USOF Board meeting, the Board discussed the situation with changes to the Relay point structure being used by OCIN and recently publicized. The Board passed the following resolution:

"It has been brought to the board's attention that the process for announcing the point structure and team composition is unclear and request OCIN to revert to the point system used last year."

OCIN has acceded to this request and their event website reflects this. I have also taken an action item to insure that the process is made more clear to avoid similar situations in the future.
