Let me start with the Australian Long Distance Championships at Maryborough. I have the GPS tracks from 4 of the top 10 finishers in M21E, Rob Preston, Simon Goddard, Dave Meyer and Bruce Arthur, along with Steven Todkill.

Download and extract the zip file to simulate the race.

The area turned out to be more interesting than expected and the course was quite good.
Notice the second last control. Everyone seemed to punch about 70m beyond the centre of the circle. I'm not sure that the mapping was very accurate around this control, but it was still easy enough to find.

Please discuss any comments you may have.

If you have additional GPS tracks that you would like included, please send me your .gpx file.

Now for NSW Stinger's"excellent adventure" at the Queensland Long Distance Championships.

I don't know what he did, but I'll let him explain. It certainly is fun to watch. I can understand why he had trouble with control 5. In fact I don't know how any of us found it. You will see what I mean when you view the simulation.

The fun part though is the route to #15. Enjoy!

QLD Champs M21E simulation

More to come later....

For the M21 QLD long a number of other age groups had your control 15, but exited in the direction you were approaching from. M50s came to the M21E No 15 from almost due east and then exited heading WNW.

there was something about that Qld champs course - I had similar excursions on 1 and 2. was going to call it quits, but decided I'd better use the rest of the course to learn how to orienteer again.

That's better than my favourite episode of Fawlty Towers. Hope my computer doesn't rust from the tears of laughter... What were you thinking when you hit the track ?

A vote of thanks for creating such a work of art and then releasing it free and without copyright. Despite a couple of years of routegadget use in bendigo, we have nothing to come close to that.

Wow. Now i understand the lack of comment of that race.

This is not as entertaining as the Qld Champs, but it is worth checking out yesterday's Victorian Long Distance Champs Route Gadget to see some great route choice legs. The course setter was Warren Key.
As a training exercise, try to select your route choice first before viewing the routes.

And whilst most people on AP will look at the open courses 1 and 3, have a look at course 5, particularly legs 11-12-13. It wasn't just the elite classes who had the good legs!

Nice! What was the light green around 26 - it can't have been too bad?
Oct 21, 2008 12:48 PM #
Oxoman:
Yes - the light green around 26 was actually pretty friendly. The dark green to the east was definitely not, and I think was more extensive than drawn on the map. It negated any advantage from going on a direct route. I ran the direct route through the dark green in each direction whilst course checking .

Now the Victorian Middle Distance Champs Route Gadget at Butterfly Gully is also available.
