I received this e-mail and thought someone on AttackPoint might know the answer. Thanks, Donna
I am wondering if perhaps you could direct me to someone in the USOF
that could answer my question. I have an older model compass that
shows the direction of East as an "O" (West is shown as a "W") and I
am wondering why this is? It is just curiosity and nothing of great
importance but it keeps me awake at night :)

Maybe German.
ost - west if I remember right

It's archaic, but "Orient" is a synonym for East. How old is that compass?
It is probably a compass made for the German/Swiss market as the O stands for ost which means east.
W would stand for westen (or westlich) in German.
Ouest means west though, not east, east is est.
