I am in Helsinki for a climate change workship a few days next week. It will be my 5th visit to Finland and I have yet to orienteer in the country. So...I am wondering if any clubs have training that week. Anybody that knows Finnish and has time to check the following web site and let me know what is available would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I did some searching and found a calender here:

February is "Helmikuu", you should be able to figure out the dates from that. Most events appear to be ski orienteering (even the ones that I though were possibly not ski orienteering, when I inspected them more closely).

I also looked at the website for the Helsinki orienteetring club here

However, their week night events "Iltarastit" don't appear to start until April. According to their website, their "English section isn't ready yet". However, they have an email address that you could maybe get some more info. Their maps (look for "Suunistuskartat" on the left) only cost 2 or 3 euros.

That's all I could find, sorry. Somebody who actually lives in Finland and not just a Finnish-Canadian who wants to practice their failing bilingualism might be of more help.

I'll take a look. Just a moment....

OK, here is some data what is going on here:

O-federation event calendar:
http://kisaweb.ssl.fi/

Next foot-o event will be:
2006-04-01 Karjaan Ura , Billnäsin pika
all events before it are ski-o events.

---

Training events:

- Helsinki district winter street-o training series (no pre registration, no epunch):
http://www.pihkaniskat.fi/kr/korttelit.htm

- Evening training events (some sort of B-level events, these are not competitons, no pre registration)
http://www.suunnistavauusimaa.fi/kunto/kalenteri/

... off-season now, event list is not yeat updated. 2005 events are still listed. But this is a good place to
start if someone visits Helsinki summer time.

More active Clubs:

... but no any foot-o happenings found there.

I think you should consider that street-o. But it is not real forest orienteering. The other alternative is to
get a map and a car and make a training on your own. Least snowy maps are usually by the sea, west from Helsinki.
For example Kopparnes, Väransby,Innanbäck, Malm

You can search thoise maps using this online map page:
http://kansalaisen.karttapaikka.fi/kartanhaku/osoi... (National Land Survey of Finland)

There is dark 17 PM, so daylight-o can be done only at weekends. I'll do O-training (weekend), if there will come no more snow. I guess I could take an extra map and pick you up if you need a ride and time scedules meet.

Jagge's description is quite extensive. Winter is indeed a low-season for foot-orinteering in Finland as there is snow even in the South, (altough not as much as I remember from my childhood...) and it really gets dark by 5 PM.

Some clubs arrange "ad hoc"-trainig sessions, i.e. night-o or sprints during the week or daytime on weekends, if the weather is fine.

If you stay for a weekend or otherwise have a day off, is should indeed be possible to get you a map from a representative an ad accessible area not too far from Helsinki.

Oh, I should have tried this "nearby" tool before. So I am not the only here who has to stand all this coldness and darkness.
