| Sandy: | Do you have it yet? |

| gail: | Yes and I'm having problems with it. I've only managed to wear it for 2-3 hrs. at a time. I'm get pain on my shin bone from the pressure and also some small bruises there. It also hurts on the outside of my knee where it is pushing in, maybe it is pushing too much though he said it was a mild correction. If I were home I'd call him up. It does distract me from my regular knee pain:-) My knee does feel much more secure but I still have the regular knee pain. So not great so far. I'll try going for some walks in Wyoming. Did you have problems adjusting to it? Are you trying to get a new brace because yours no longer fits well? |

| Sandy: | I had some problems adjusting, but not too much. The shin bone pressure was one thing that was hard to get used to, but after a month it wasn't so bad and now I rarely notice anything there. My leg actually now has indents where some of the straps go so I don't need to make them so tight and they still stay put.
I fiddled around with exactly where on my leg I would wear it, and actually wear it slightly lower than I'm supposed to. I found a place where the strap right below the knee in back could sit without irritating me and that position allowed me to walk and run without pain and swelling so I didn't particularly care about where it was "supposed" to sit. When I weigh a bit more than usual (like right now), the pads on the side of the knee will create a sore spot if I wear the brace for a long period. And in general, if I've worn it all day for a long day like 10 or 12 hours, that's the one spot where it will still occasionally be a little sore. One thing that helped when I first started wearing it was that for a while I wore it over leggings instead of directly on my skin. When I orienteer, I wear tights and wear it over the tights and again, that helps. I originally got a knee brace in 1999 but did not get an "athletic" one. I cracked it in 2001 by trying to put too much tension on the straps and my health insurance would not pay for a new one. So I bought myself a new one, paying for it myself, and made sure to get a heavy-duty athletic type one with a life-time warranty. I wore out the hinge in 2004 and they replaced it for free with one that was identical. It's been long enough and work has changed insurance carriers so I decided to try and see if I could get a new one. The one I have fits fine, but it's a real pain trying to keep it clean and not smelly. I wear it everyday to work - I definitely need it to teach - and washing the pads and so on is a bit of a pain and they can get pretty rank from just sweat let alone going through mud and so on. So I was hoping to just get a second one so I could have a work one and a work-out one. |

| gail: | Thanks Sandy. I'll play around with it and see if I can find a more comfortable position. It wasn't too bad for the time I was out on the map. Earlier the shin pain was worst when just sitting in the car. So I took it off once I was no longer walking around.
Hard to imagine that they would deny you a brace. Hope you find out soon. |

| Sandy: | One more thing - my big hinge is on the inside although I expect yours is on the outside - and it took a long time, maybe 6 months or more, before I stopped whacking my other leg with the hinge. I had a big bruise there for a while.
I mention this because it's possible that you're walking differently to accommodate the brace and that might contribute to various hip and other knee pain. |
