Discussion: Route Gadget scaling

jingo6390: I downloaded a route to RouteGadget and the route showed up 2-3 times as big as the map. Can this be corrected? It was really difficult squeezing the route to fit the map and gave an inaccurate simulation. Parts of the route were squeezed more than others and so appeared slower during the simulation.

danf: The map itself is just a jpg file with no scale information built in, so the route won't be the same size. My route came out very large as well.

Awesome that you guys came out to Laguna and really great runs by your kids (except for one mistake by each boy I think), especially on this sometimes flaky map (where rocks sometimes seem to be sprinkled like pepper flakes rather than accurately mapped) and with the hard yellow/brown course. Its crazy how good they're all getting after such a short time orienteering.

danf: I'm not sure how routegadget/gpx files work, but it may not simulate speeds correctly if you have the smoothing function turned on in the GPS (routegadget may count points rather than time, expecting them to be evenly spaced in time). Its better to have the FR set to collect every second.

Also, if you're interested in looking at relative speeds on different parts of a course, check out quickroute which color codes the course by speed. A jpg of the Laguna map (without controls however) that you would need for quickroute can be found here.

jingo6390: so if you change the size of the jpg file, would the routes match up better?

danf: Jagge could answer this better than me, but no, I don't think so (in terms of the distortions). There is some limit to the GPS accuracy and the map may contain distortions as well. I'm not sure if routegadget imports the times, but I'm guessing it just imports the coordinate info from the gpx file. If that is the case, and you have your gps set to "smart recording" instead of set to "record a point every second," the timing in the simulation will appear to be off. Reshaping the course in routegadget would then also affect the simulation timing much more with smart recording than with "every second" recording I believe.

distracted: If you're talking GPS routes then you have to fit them to the map as they'll never be of the same scale. This is initially done by adjusting the 3 points on the trace, then you can move more - I'm sure you can just follow the instructions as you go through the routegadget upload, or http://www.routegadget.net/grgpshelp/ gives a good overview.

danf: I think he's asking why the GPS animation in routegadget does not hit control 4 at the same time as the epunch split animation does here. The only reason I can think of is that "smart recording" is used in the GPS which might import incorrectly, or maybe the GPS receiver lost reception for short periods of time.

jingo6390: when you have a route that is about 2-3 times larger than the map and you try to adust it with the 3 blue points, parts of the route get compressed more than other parts, and the parts than get more compressed appear to be run slower than the parts that dont get compressed as much. At least that is what it looks like to me.

Jagge: if the first phase 3 point calibration (affine) feels difficult, you can press ok without any changes and do all editing in phase 2 (rotate/scale). Some users do it always this way.

jingo6390: I dont see where you can do editing in phase 2 (rotate/scale)???

#  Posted 2008-07-14 22:04:05
jingo6390: are you using a GPX format???

Jagge: just drag blue points, it will rotate/scale between those points. It doesnt matter what format you use.
