Nominated for this week's macho workout is Ken Walker the Elder's (aka "kadley') Thursday effort --
X-C Skiing (Night -- skate) 1:46:00 [2] 15.0 km (7:04 / km)
-10F and -30 wind chill -- made for a brisk evening. Eyelids kept freezing shut on the downhill sections. Also made the snow drag and had to work for glide. Felt tired, but maybe because it took so much effort to keep the skis moving. Supposed to warm up tommorrow after it drops to -20 or so again tonight.

A close second is Dmitriy Kourtchikov's (aka "Dmitriy") workout on the same day --
Cycling (2-way work commute) 2:34:00 [4] 28.8 mi (5:20 / mi)
Mountain bike. Snow, ice, 6 F (-12F with windchill), facing north wind up to 25 mph during my morning commute. Not fun...

Ken is THE MAN. I'll probably take subway @ -10F . Actually, Friday's morning commute was my coldest commute ever. 1F (-20F with wind-chill) and 25+ mph North wind according the Weather Web site. Bike brings wind to 35-40 mph...
BTW, an interesting problem came out after my Thu/Fri commutes. Here it is. It's close to 0F and you have to bike North facing wind 25 mph. What is an optimal speed that will keep you warm without increasing too much front wind adding to the wind-chill factor?

I don't know -- riding a bike sounds tough to me. My first thought would be to turn around and head South at 25 mph ... that would solve the wind chill problem, but not the getting to work problem.

I actually love the winter season. If you dress right with a couple poly pro layers and a nylon wind shell, you can be totally comfortable. With not much hair, you also need a good hat to cover the ears and neck when it's really cold.

Too many people just hide out inside until it gets warm again, and miss some really pretty days and a chance to build base. As with everything, a lot is just having a positive mental attitude.

The XC ski races in Lake Placid this Saturday have been postponed to Feb 7 because of a forecast 0F high plus wind. I ran into Brad last night at EMS by chance....we were both there buying new gloves and mid-layers. Will miss out on the Loppet this year I guess, but the Saratoga Ski-O is still on for Sunday.

And that rhymes in Swedish.
