simmo: Painathlon is back for 2008 and provides the toughest and hilliest one-day run/cycle event in Australia while aiming to raise $25,000 towards Variety WA Childrens Charity grants. Painathlon is a not-for-profit event run by Perth med student Jonathan Hague and was won in an incredible 7.5 hours in 2007 by Brad Hosking. Jenni Tibbits was first female and finished the 10th and final challenge (10 laps of Jacobs Ladder) right on 10.5 hours.

Painathlon takes place on Saturday, August 9th this year. After beginning 7am at City Beach the field must negotiate 160km around Perths toughest fitness runs and hills to eventually finish at the Jacobs Ladder finale. Other challenges include Cardiac Hill in Kings Park, the Truth run in Brigadoon and Quadcruncher in Orange Grove. An orienteering control is located at the finish of each challenge. The aim is to survive and punch off as many challenges as possible on the race-card before sunset.

Full details of all challenges can be found at www.painathlon.com including a zoomable google map of the course and opportunity to register for the entry form as soon as it is available by email.

This year Peter Watson, former Olympic 1500m runner, has agreed to assist with the start and finish of Painathlon. Additionally we have a full triathlon/marathon style finish chute to punctuate the completion of this epic challenge.

Painathlon '08 costs $50 to enter but anyone able to raise $250+ for Variety (handed in before the start) will have the entry fee waived.

Tooms: Fletch, Evo, even though it has delusions of grandeur, are you vaguely interested? Might even interest tRicky and RobbieJ again.

#  Posted 2008-06-09 16:56:57
tRicky: Yeah I'm up for some hurt.

simmo: Tooms, I thought you'd be off to Polski by then, but if you're still here it could be a good warm up for Jen & Cath.

Jon Hague says you don't have to do all the challenges - if you're running out of time to do them all, at 4pm the marshalls will direct you back to Jacob's ladder from wherever you are on the course.

Tooms: MTBjen goes to Poland a lot earlier than I do, I sneak over for the last event and a week's playtime... leave is pretty tight from work.

As for the challenges, I think we'll be on time - not quite Hosko's time from last year (freak!) but still daylight.

nicki: I'm an adventure racer/triathlete/orienteer who lives in Calgary, but I'm actually from Perth originally and was REALLY excited to hear about this fun-sounding event. I'm returning home for a while later this year so hopefully I'll join the torture for 2009. Those are some of my favourite old training jaunts.

tRicky: Not finish the course - are you mad???

#  Posted 2008-06-10 19:01:55
Evo: Could do it i suppose, most of those runs arn't that hard.ill sit behind you and tRicky on the bike.Plus if Tibbits can do it.

Tooms: Brigadoon hill is pretty awful - I've ridden up it a couple of times, and on one lovely day with a howling nor-easterly wind hit 93.4kph on the way down. They did the state road bike hill climb champs up there once. Orange Grove isn't a nice hill either. I think you'll get too far ahead of me once we hit those "real" hills, but up till then it'll be fun to stay as a trio.

#  Posted 2008-06-18 14:10:04
tRicky: Don't knock Tibbits.

Is Brigadoon Hill the same as Red Hill? I rode up that once. It was hot.

#  Posted 2008-06-18 17:55:37
Tooms: Noooo, silly. Red Hill is in, well, Red Hill. Brigadoon Hill is in, wait for it.... Brigadoon!

More specifically, Brigadoon hill is at Bells Rapids and is pretty steep and straight. Red Hill is longer and slightly curly and a darn sight easier. Have a look at their maps on the website. Sticking up for Titbits are you?

simmo: Painathlon have organised a practice run/ride over the first 5 challenges*, (and maybe a ride up to the hills challenges afterwards) starting at 9am this Saturday (28 June) at City Beach. Email Jono jhague@hotmail.com by Friday if you're up for it.

*City Beach, Reabold, Kings Park, Mount St, and Bridges. Bike ride would go to Brigadoon and/or Orange Grove.

tRicky: Brigadoon and Red Hill are both in the NE of Perth, out in the sticks, so pretty much means the same thing to me.

I have to stick up for Tibbits. She's my teammate.
