zoolander: Hi Guys,

I'm heading to the Bridgeport - Bishop CA area this summer to spend some time hiking/running the mountains as I spend a week searching for Steve Fossett. I am wondering if there are good O-maps of the area, or if the USGS topos are the best ones out there.

Thanks.
Zoo

evancuster: The only O maps that I am aware of in the Sierra are in the Tahoe area. The 2 in the South Lake Tahoe area are Spooner Lake and Fallen Leaf Lake. However, Tahoe is quite a ways from Bishop.

blegg: I'm not aware of many O-maps out there. Bishop is really isolated from any population center. Evan mentioned the South Lake Tahoe stuff. All of that was mapped for BAOC.

Bear Valley on hwy 4 is physically closer, but is probably just as far to drive (is this only mapped for ski-o?). Maybe others know of something else?

Even if you're stuck on USGS, you're going to be near some really awesome terrain. Let me know if you find anything really nice.

jjcote: And let us know if you find Fossett.

zoolander: Thanks. Hopefully the USGS maps provide the detail I need.
You'll hear if I have any luck with the search, that's for sure!

blegg: Regarding USGS for orienteering training in the sierras. It will work in some areas and not in others.

When you pick a spot for terrain running, check the contour interval. 20ft is good, 80ft isn't much fun. Runs with more tree cover are often more pleasant, but map quality suffers greatly. I typically look for areas with a high density of small lakes and ponds. It generally indicates a flatter, more intricate terrain, and it guarantees some good features.

boyle: How far was today's find from the aforementioned search?

Hammer: I had lunch with Zoolander earlier today and he told me it was the next site on their list of places to look (but they had ran out of time).

zoolander: Here is the article in Outside online: http://outside.away.com/outside/destinations/20081...

Basically, we were to spend 3 days north of Bridgeport and 3 days in Yosemite. A tip on the first day caused us to spend 2 extra days in the Bodie Hills area and then it was impracticle to hit Yosemite for a day or so.

Fantastic news though that he has been found!
