Vector: Anyone know of some good resources out there for learning to use OCAD?

I just moved to Michigan and am looking to start learning OCAD. I have some GIS background but I'm guessing the user guide that comes with OCAD won't be all that helpful. My aim is to learn the software well enough I can be of assistance to my new club (SMOC) and also be able to build new maps in my area.

Also, before I spend loads of money on this software, anyone have suggestions for making sure I get a good deal?

simmo: The user guide (Help) is actually quite good, and OCAD9 comes with a free guide book (pdf). Also check the OCAD website http://www.ocad.com/en/index.htm, the IOF Map Commission site http://lazarus.elte.hu/mc/ and the Orienteering Australia mapping pages http://orienteering.asn.au/technical/mapping/.

Surely if you're doing the mapping for your club, they would buy the license?

There's only one place to buy OCAD, so you can't wheel and deal, except its probably best for your club to purchase multiple licenses rather than you purchase one license.

seelenfliege: Hi Vector,

I found OCAD very intuitive and just used the good old "learning by doing" method. Although on the mentioned OCAD website there are lots of very good instructions and tutorials, even in form of videos.

If you want to test OCAD you can download and use the version 6 for free! The drawing functions are the same as in the newer versions, so for just drawing the map it is enough. And you can also download a test version of the new version with all the new features, which is just limited to 500 objects, but is still enough to draw a small test map. Just try it out!

Vector: Simmo & seelenfliege - wow, thanks! Great pointers. Glad to hear the manual is helpful. I checked out the links, looks great. I'll download the test version to get started.
