Discussion: New computer application for orienteers with Garmin GPS watches

Thomas Graupner: Hi everyone,

I have developed a computer application called OGPS that lets orienteers with Garmin GPS watches see exactly where they went during their races.

This program offers the following advantages:
- It is free.
- It allows you to align the track using lap points or any other places along your route.
- It allows you to play back your route at a proportional speed, such as 60X actual speed.

xctimo: Very cool. Thanks

medag: Is it system independent? For example can, I use it on linux?

#  Posted 2008-05-05 20:20:24
Thomas Graupner: The application requires the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0. In order to run it on Linux, you would probably have to use a virtual machine with Windows.

simon: You can try with Mono, which is an open source multi-platform migration of .net

Not sure about compability/stability issues though. If you try, give us some feedback!

Bernard: Nice! Will it work with other handeld Garmin units like the 60CS?

#  Posted 2008-05-05 21:54:13
Thomas Graupner: Currently, the application only loads tracks exported from Garmin Training Center. So it won't work with handheld units at the moment, unless you can somehow get their tracks into GTC.

I think the application will work with the following devices, as they all use GTC according to Garmin's website:
- Garmin Forerunner 201
- Garmin Forerunner 301
- Garmin Forerunner 205
- Garmin Forerunner 305
- Garmin Forerunner 405
- Garmin Edge 205
- Garmin Edge 305
- Garmin Edge 605
- Garmin Edge 705

I may add support for other file types and/or direct communication with GPS devices, but I don't have a lot of spare time at the moment.

Bernard: hmm. Sounds like a good candidate for a cool open source project.

Thomas Graupner: Hi everyone,

I have just released a new version of OGPS. In this version, file operations are no longer affected by the user's regional settings. This fixes a bug that prevented tracks from being loaded in regions where the decimal symbol is a comma.

I have also added some new features to the Control Circles tab. There is now a counter displaying the number of circles and a button that allows you to easily delete all the circles at once.

xctimo: I guess it is not yet possible to play two (or more) seperate tracks on the same map image simultaneously? That would be an interesting feature..

#  Posted 2008-05-09 01:44:20
Thomas Graupner: No, that is not possible yet. However, it is something I might implement in the future. There could even be an option for starting the tracks at the same time or replaying them with respect to the actual time of day. That way, we could see how close runners were to each other and whether they influenced each other.

Bruce: Nice application. Good on you for offering this free.

If you want to pay a small amount, most of this functionality has already been developed in OTrack

JanetT: Thanks, Thomas. I uploaded a track onto a recent training run and it looks pretty good.

Question: is there a way to save the track-over-map as a jpg to share with non-OGPS users? (i.e., to post in my log)

Saving the map at less than 200 dpi resolution would result in a smaller file, too, I would think.

#  Posted 2008-05-09 20:42:30
Thomas Graupner: Currently, there is no export image feature. However, this feature sounds easy to implement, so it may be in the next version.

At the moment, you can press Alt+Print Screen to copy the window onto the clipboard. Then you can go into an image editing program (such as Paint), paste the image, and crop out just the part you want. (This is how I created the screenshot on the OGPS home page.)

The 200 dpi resolution mentioned in the Online Help is just a suggested resolution for creating the map image. You can use whatever resolution you want, but it may be hard to see fine map detail at lower resolutions.

bubo: xctimo >> ...play two or more separate tracks...
There is also another freeware program that does just that - Compare Tracks.

Thomas Graupner: Hi everyone,

I have just released version 1.3.0 of OGPS. This version contains the following improvements:
- Ability to color the track according to speed, elevation, or heart rate
- Ability to see information about a single track point or a segment of the track
- Ability to export images of the map and track
- Support for more image file formats

Visit the following web page for more information or to download the application:
