On reading over Mikkel's commentary, it's interesting to note our opposite interpretations.
From 8 to 9, Mikkel says "safe on trails", I say "confused twice by trails".
From 18 to 19, Mikkel says he went straight over and got killed and should have gone around to the left. I say I went around to the left and the reason the others were faster must have been that they went straight.
