As a Possum Trot rookie I am wondering what advice is available for the upcoming event. Do I actually have to dress like a possum? Are deer hunters going to be trying to chase us or worse? Would this be a bad weekend to wear my cute Rudolph hat with antlers?
Or if you have any actual thoughts that would be great too. As with any new event that I attend or big competition I do, work is beginning to suffer early in the week.
Find Mr. Swampfox in the crowd an hold on to him as long as you can - not a bad strategy, but you need to be fit to be able to do this.
My best results have come when I have pretty much ignored the above mentioned luminary and just focused on navigation. After a few minutes, I'm into the map and then can run in the group with confidence. Following without reading can lead to some really unpleasant mistakes - particularly when it comes time to make skip decisions.
This year's terrain is fairly easy navigationally, but a brute physically. Blowing yourself up early to stay with a group is probably a really bad idea. The lead pack usually breaks up by halfway anyhow, then it comes down to who can hold the pace on their own. Many positions have changed in the last few K.
Jerritt,
Didn't anybody tell you about the initiation ceremony for newcomers to the Possum Trot? It really is very special (especially for out of towners) See you on Sunday . The mass start race is a blast too : - )
