The cables are good but there's no way they beat free weights - they're a good core exercise as the second part of your workout but they're not dynamic enough to simulate running movements and build real explosive strength. They should be an aswell as exercise, not an instead of!

OK what I should have said was they are more running specific than the free-weight leg exercises I've been doing i.e. squats/calf raises. I guess you're talking about plyometric leg exercises with free-weights i.e jumps/bounds with bar/dumbells and I agree totally. Just wait until my knee gets better and I will start combining what I do now with the plyometrics stuff as I think I have enuff of a thorough grounding in weight training. Obv still introduce it gradually tho.
