Is this event happening? The website, https://o-tour.cz/, says that it will be July 11-17, but that was dated last August and there has been no updates since. I'm starting to make travel plans and want to know if I should plan for WMOC in Italy instead.

Yes you should.

You would probably do well flying to Calgary and SE British Columbia for eight days of truly fantastic orienteering before heading to whatever part of Europe you pick.

gordhun, prod your friends in AB and BC to put their events on the Attackpoint schedule! If the details aren’t nailed down, put something up as preliminary. We can only schedule our plans around meets that we know about, and now is the time many of us are planning the summer itinerary.

origamaguy, I am pretty sure you (and I) would enjoy WMOC in Italy. And if you want two events for the price of one (round trip plane ticket), WMOC is immediately preceded by the 5 Days of Italy.

@o-maps WCOC and COC appears to be a go July 1-10 in AB and BC. Website is crof2022.ca
I'm not directly involved, but I will see if I can get someone to update everything asap. I moved the postponed WCOC event listing you created to the new dates. Thx for the reminder.

o-maps, thanks for the suggestion. The 5 days is a long day from the WMOC, practically in Switzerland. I'm thinking that if I do go to Italy, I'll spend some time doing non-orienteering stuff, like Pompeii.

Nothing in Europe is far from anything else in Europe, unless they are enforcing border restrictions (but you're talking about the same country).

You're talking about major cities. From Madonna di Campiglio to Vieste is a ten hour drive or even longer on a train. The website says they will have a bus, but that's still 10 hours on a bus.

We're driving 7hrs+ tomorrow for a cycling event on Sunday and then back on Monday. Driving that distance rather than previously having to fly 4hrs to the east coast for major events (or longer if it was a hard to reach place like Canberra, which is coincidentally where we're going tomorrow) and then having to drive further is a cinch.

If you're going to fly around the world for a multi-day event, what's another ten hours in a car to do another one?

My goodness, it's so beautiful around Madonna di Campiglio...at the 2018 5-Days of Italy, I lost my heart to the mountains!

Most of Italy is beautiful and I´ve been to both the mountains and the Amalfi coast + Rome, Venize, Pisa, Pompei etc. WMOC in 2022 will be a new part of the country for us. Driving in Italy is fast on the motorways but you won´t see much of the landscape since they often have concrete barriers blocking the view. Minor roads are nice but also much slower. The same goes for driving in the mountains - distances may be short but takes a lot longer than you would anticipate.

Czech Republic is also nice with nicely organized events. I was there in 2013 at a 5Day Event north of Novy Bor close to the German border. Interesting landscape - and of course orienteering - with the many stone formations.

It looks like the Czech O-Tour has been split up into three weekends in different months. It doesn't make sense to travel there three times from the US. I'm working on planning a trip to Italy.

They've turned a negative into a positive, which is a negative for anybody who doesn't live in Czech Republic or a negative if you're only going to be in Europe for a week and going to WMOC (or WMTBOC) instead.
