That's pretty cool. I raced on a grass track once as a teenager. The local bike club (or more accurately my father) organized a one-off race day on a field at the civic center. It was a lot of fun.

Yeah, it is cool. I like that they just went ahead and did it. Very low key and small. I know a bunch of the people involved.

I grew up a couple of houses away from Bill Anderson. Mark Thomas was a serious tri-athlete, runner, cyclist and occasional orienteer. He ran a Tri-athlon store and carried some orienteering gear. He even sponsored one of the old versions of the OK club jerseys. And Steve Schwada is someone I got to know a bit when I worked for the City of Lawrence.

I liked this bit of the articel:

When Kansans set their minds to do something, things get done in any way possible. Lawrence cyclist Bill Anderson had that mindset. Anderson and Kansas City, Kansas, cyclist Mark Thomas tried to convince city officials in both Johnson and Douglas counties to build a certified velodrome for the cycling-happy communities. After their plans were thwarted by city and county officials, they turned to grass with a small track set in a Johnson County park in 2008 with little lasting results.

The following year, land developer Steve Schowda devoted the current velodrome location in a scenic field outside Lawrence. A cyclocross course sits past a line of trees to the east for fall races.

Very cool that it was the starting place for Ashton Lambie, too.

Definitely cool! Looks like a lot of fun. Hopefully we will see Ashton in Tokyo this summer.
