Have you been so Americanized that Happy has became Merry? I have a British son-in-law in the Boston area so I got wished a Happy Christmas and we pulled crackers.

I'm not sure that there's anything un-British about a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I've come across folks who wish each other a Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year, just because they like to be contrary. And because a Merry New Year implies inebriation in a way that a Merry Christmas somehow doesn't.

Yeah...wasn’t aware there was a British versus American way. I’ve always used them pretty much interchangeably.

For what it's worth, I'd say Merry is the more common usage in Australia.

Dickens uses Merry Christmas throughout A Christmas Carol (pub. 1843), from which much of the modern-day UK / US Christmas tradition derives.
