Orienteer Kansas had no by-laws, memberships or board for 30+ years. You can do a bare bones organization. The key is to register with OUSA, of course, to get the insurance.
We finally organized this year, driven by the desire to use the OUSA registration system. We needed PayPal for that. PayPal requires a registered organization EIN Number. We registered with Kansas as a non-profit. Which now requires a board, members, and an annual meeting. Ironically, we're not using the OUSA registration system now (but we are using PayPal).
Hate to bring this up, but some clubs in Canada looked at Covid as the crisis needed to push to ensure they had their non-profit / incorporated policies in order to risk manage liability.
It's nice to hear perspectives from others. Thanks, Mary and Nevin. I think we will go ahead and get an EIN at the very least and register with Montana as a non-profit. I expect we will join OUSA before too long, as well.
Boris it is so cool that you have people wanting to step up! Congrats!
