I'm super excited because Navigation Games just got a $15,000 grant to create a progressive curriculum for outdoor map navigation.
Quoting our application, we will be successful if:
* We work directly with at least 1000 children.
* We enable at least 100 educators who adopt our curriculum.
* Our programs are recommended and adopted by educational and recreational organizations (*cough* OUSA *cough*)
* We create documentation (written and video) that is accessible by educators throughout the country.
* Children who participate (1) show demonstrable improvement in map-reading and map navigation ability; (2) work together in teams and report positive interactions with other children; (3) spend more time outside; (4) come to see outdoor recreational activities as life-long opportunities for physical activity and enjoyment of nature; (5) feel more self-confident in outdoor and unfamiliar spaces; and (6) represent all demographics in the greater Boston area.
Clubs, feel free to steal this plan to get grants to bring orienteering to kids. Also, our curriculum is freely available. We have published a draft previously (2-week, 3rd grade, in-person), but over the winter we'll update with what we've been doing in JK-3, both in-person and remote, for a 3-week PE unit.
Off to celebrate!
Wow, that's excellent! Well done!
That's wonderful!! Well done, Barb and Navigation Games!
This came from the Cabot Foundation; we do not know anyone there, so this felt really motivating. They must really like what we are doing. From their website, here is what they support:
"Awards are put to work in the areas of arts and culture, education and youth development, environment and conservation, health and human services, and for civic and public benefit.
Within these fields, as appropriate, the trustees prefer programs mainly serving youth and young adults, with a special interest in programs focused on ensuring the healthy growth and development of infants and young children, as a foundation for their future success."
Awesome - congratulations and well done!
Congratulations, Barb & NG!!
Very nice Barb. Learning more about Cabot's businesses in
chemicals and plastics is quite informative.
Congrats Barb! I'm so happy for you and Navigation Games.
Congratulations Barb! You are doing inspiring work!
Way to go Barb! Will be looking for the Material you created to help our club
Your persistence is amazing. Way to go.
Well deserved! And Best of LUCK!
We will hold an
online tea party tomorrow for those interested in quizzing us about what we're up to, and potentially making a donation once you hear how we'd spend your money!
