One of my more memorable experiences in life was driving a tiny little Honda City 2-seater up Hotham by myself, in the snow, late at night and in a fog. I crawled along pole by pole - keeping the snowpoles on my left. Suddenly there was a pole on my right, and l slammed on the brakes as the car went over the edge. Fortunately it stopped - balanced on th edge of a drop of several hundred meters. I carefully opened the door, ready to jump if the wind blew the car over, then sat on the side of the road huddled in my sleeping bag. Eventually a man in a 4WD ute came along, with a chain, and towed me back on the road, then escorted me to Hotham. It was a very scary experience. They have put more poles and a fence in since then.
Oh no Prue - memorable!!! Scary too.
My first time up that road was on a bike.
Prue - that sounds like a seriously scary experience. I haven't actually heard of people going off the edge (at least with drastic consequences), which surprises me a little.
My first time up Hotham was also on a bike towing my Bob trailer, on a New Years Eve about 15 yrs ago, with 2 friends. Was cold as hell and a total white out, couldnt see more than 5m. Meant to be having dinner at Dinner Plain and camping but rang Dale & Blake and got the code to their time-share & had a much more meagre dinner, as nothing open when we arrived. Also had a unique descent on that trip, riding down while the roads were closed due to the big bushfires...loong story.
Yes, fogs can be very bad on that road. Hence my problem.
