I laughed out loud and startled the cat! I'm currently addicted to Shetland on PBS. Unfortunately the end of season five is coming this Sunday and then I'll be out of luck. I have to admit its not the best thing to watch in pandemic isolation, but its beautifully dark. Maybe the the next season of Endeavor will offer a pick-me-up. Haven't heard of Inspector Gamache. Do you have one to recommend?

It's a book series by Canadian author Louise Penny. All the ones that I've read have been enjoyable including one that involves finding an old orienteering map. I don't remember the name of that one but I know it was discussed on attackpoint when it was published.

That’s how I got into them - I bought that one for my Mum, she loved it, and read the whole series. I am trying to space them out a bit as they are bizarrely good for the soul, despite being centered around a murder. I think it was Carol who knows the town that most of the books are loosely based on, and indeed, orienteering appears at a point I haven’t yet got to!

So I just recommend to start at the beginning: https://www.goodreads.com/series/42154-chief-inspe...

Also, is anyone watching His Dark Materials? Enjoying it a lot here.

A Great Reckoning is the one mentioning orienteering. I have it in book form but have not read it yet. When we did a Road Scholar (organized trip) visit to Quebec City two years ago, one bonus field trip was a Louise Penny tour of the city noting all the sites mentioned.

I read the His Dark Materials books with my younger son many years ago. Is it streaming somewhere? (Edit: HBO, which we don't subscribe to)
