I took to heart your comments on the tread Orienteering Tourism.
What are your thoughts about the present situation where some states are opening with phase one and phase two while other states are having accelerated increases of cases?

Honestly, I’m at a total loss. I understand why people are responding to the mixed messages the way they are but I am pretty afraid of what’s coming.

For our family - we are staying home and won’t be entering indoor spaces unless the other people there are all wearing masks. The large research hospital we work for thinks high risk for infection is spending ten minutes or more in an enclosed space with an infected person, and one or both of you is unmasked. They eliminated all hospital based transmission by introducing a universal mask policy and are convinced that masks are effective to protect others (unless they are N95 they are less effective for protecting yourself). We are currently at 25% capacity throughout the hospital. I don’t believe this is over cautious.

With regards to travel - I would still minimize it. We are starting to see upticks in rural areas that are not prepared with testing infrastructure or ICU beds and that could be really disastrous. This is the biggest risk for others of traveling to participate in leisure activities.

We are in a slightly better position than March - we know how best to ventilate seriously ill patients, we understand a little more about transmission (but many questions still remain), we have no treatment, and no vaccine. We don’t know how long previously infected individuals retain immunity, and if they lose it if future infections will be less serious. At best in NYC 20-30% of the population have likely been exposed (we still really don’t know) which is not approaching herd immunity even in the worst infected part of the country.

I think orienteering is a relatively safe sport to participate in. I wouldn’t stand next to a control while someone else runs in to punch it, but compared to many things it’s pretty low risk.

Do you have any specific questions? I’d be happy to try to answer them.

I should add - I would go to a carefully planned local orienteering meet/ experience if I didn’t have an eight month old!

Orienteering with eight month olds is a good exercise in map memory. They chew on it a lot
