The World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, moves to July 2022
The International World Games Association and Birmingham Organising Committee have agreed to postpone the 11th edition of The World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, until 7th to 17th July 2022. The Games had originally been planned to take place from 15-25 July next year.
So now it clashes with WOC2022....
The first week doesn't clash...
What the heck!!!?? It wasn't scheduled till twenty TWENTY ONE! As in over a year from now!!
@Vector
My understanding is that the World Games are not directly being postponed due to COVID-19 concerns a year and a bit away, but rather indirectly because next summer sporting events will be dominated by the (formerly 2020) now 2021 Summer Olympics. Running the World Games in 2021 shortly before, during or after the Olympics would likely be highly detrimental to World Games revenues, participation, etc.
The fact that it now conflicts with WOC is a big issue for orienteers.
The fact that it now conflicts with WOC is a big issue for orienteers.
And a complete non-issue for all of the other World Games sports.
Ah, how the dominos fall. That makes more sense.
And the IOF is discussing the conflict between TWG and WOC at their meeting this weekend as one piece of the decisions on how deal with all the other postponements. They were seeking input from national federations this week.
It's how amazing how much everything in the sports world revolves around the Olympics.
A World Championships in a non-Olympic sport is having to change dates in 2022 because the Olympics is postponed from 2020...
