in: Orienteering; Off-Course

orienteeringmom:
I need to talk to John Fredrickson about the Water Stop which is down and has been down for a while now. I have left him phone messages on his cell with no response back and I have sent emails with no response. I even called his dad and left a message with him and no response from that effort. If you know where he is or can reach him PLEASE ask him to contact me. Thanks

I have located John F. leaning on the door frame of my kitchen door and smiling. But this was a week ago. So this sighting is somewhat outdated. My guess is, send a detective to Worcester. Kidding aside, John is a busy person. If you are patient and if we maintain the thread here for a while he might respond.

I think we have a detective in Worcester. Detective Mario, eh?

YAY!!!! thank you who ever put it back up!!! us juniors missed it greatly! we had a great movie game going that Fraser started a while ago that we were missing. and of course some interesting discussions on o-ing. THANKS!!!

I find this rather interesting that suddenly it is up and running again. I'm very glad that it is don't get me wrong but after a number of unreturned calls and not replied to emails to John, and this posting it just suddenly came back. So I guess I better publicly say "THANK YOU, John and the juniors thank you too!"
Jan 16, 2008 3:06 AM #
piutepro:
By the way, Janet, how is the junior camp coming along (well, I need something to keep the thread going). -- Yes, Mario is there. They are swamped with snow and it appears the kids go to school via an underground tunnel in the snow. Kind of like snow mice.

I'm pretty sure I saw John Frederickson at a casino in Las Vegas last weekend. He was smoking a cigar and chatting up some showgirls.

Maybe if Marc puts a post on attackpoint, John will get back to him... he has been trying to get ahold of John for about 6 months now.

orienteeringmom:
Go for it Marc! I will attest to the fact that John is DEFINITELY a very difficult young man to get a hold but I still love Ya, John!

PS Dan I thought you and Jon were working on the camp with Jeff. We plan to hold it but the last I heard we are still trying to nail down a date!
Jan 16, 2008 11:22 AM #
TyrTom:
I am also interested in knowing the date for the junior camp to potentially coordinate team coaching activities around the dates.

I also have a question for John, and I emailed him about it some time ago. Elusive guy. But college does take a lot of time, no question about that.

I have left him phone messages on his cell

Here is what I noticed about leaving voice-mail messages on my son's cell (he is 17). He rarely checks them. Also he almost never leaves me voice-mail messages when he calls and he says that he does not like to leave voice-mail. He and all his buddies are growing up with cellphones in their pockets. Their way of "leaving message" is to call someone and if they do not respond - cellphone retains the number and the name of the callers who tried to reach them. They treat "missed calls" list like I would "voice-mail" messages. Once they see a name on their "missed call" list they assume that the other person wanted to talk to them and they call back the number. After I witnessed few times this new "phenomenon" I finally understood why he does not leave me voice-mail messages. However I will admit that we had some semi-heated discussions where I would say "leave me voice-mail message when you call" and he would say "I don't like leaving voicemail messages".

Regarding Email - he probably checks his Email account maybe once per week. However if I catch him in Instant Messenger then he will respond right away. Texting is huge with new generation as well. Right or wrong - this is how the "new" generation communicates these days.

Other phenomenon of new generation is that they rarely listen to radio and not too much into watching TV. Last two leaves corporate America puzzled how to reach to new generation since radio and TV ads won't work as efficient as for rest of us. New generation relies on "word-of-mouth" regarding new products. Someone gets new product, evaluates it by using it and then they will tell their buddies about it via new means of communication channels. I think this is awesome since corporations will have to focus more on producing quality product instead of elaborate multi-million dollar marketing campaigns to push the product.

New generation, huh? That´s the way I do it - and I wouldn´t be mistaken for being of the young generation... I have never even opened any of the 'masses' of voice mails that land in my cell phone. Missed calls list is good enough for me.

(As for John´s whereabouts - I haven´t got a clue. He´s not here in Sweden as far as I know.)

John loses his cell phone from time to time, so this is not a valid approach either. In his defense, he colleges (new verb) and has two jobs. At least one of them is computer related, so he should have time to check his e-mail at work. My informant and close ally tells me, that he sometimes has a hard time to get John to answer, but when it counts, they find each other. Also to consider: John and Sophie have a puppy dog. Takes time & attention.
I am only waiting for the moment when John finds out about this thread. He will be pleased how many people ask about him.

What about a reward to find JF? Some people have a great advantage. J-J could drive over and easily act as a bounty hunter. PG could go bounty hunting instead of digging out golf balls from under the snow. Not to speak about my informant in Worcester, but he is heavily into colleging, too. What is going on, are college students taking their thing seriously now?

I have noticed that cellphone trends in Europe are few years ahead of US common practices. Even my co-worker for India was shocked how much more cellphones are used in India compared to US (he just returned from vacation).

Formerly, I felt safe. Very secure. Knowing that young John Fredrickson was positively positioned in the center of that most curiously shaped of the malformed states. No one of the players would dare move him. The endgame isn't at hand yet, and it would leave too great a gap in the defences against the hordes of the Great White North. Unshaven hockey players with missing teeth could stream down unchecked. If they reached as far as Georgia, they could even interrupt the grit harvest.

But, now, everything is uncertain. Maybe he is there. Maybe he isn't. Maybe he eats the dark red bog fruits. Oceanspray!

Or maybe...he has taken to the road in search of fresh air.

Everybody colleging knows that you have to head west to find fresh air, nothing east of the Mississippi will do. Even Elvis knew that, and I saw him once in Knob Noster State Park. He had dark sunglasses and a curled lip sneer and was leaving the park, behind the wheel in a shiny long American convertible of a different era. When I saw him, I didn't think of young John Fredrickson, but now that I think of young John Fredrickson, I do think of Elvis.

Yes, I think it is possible young John Fredrickson has left, and now Massachusetts is very vulnerable. He could be in Omaha by now, or even Sidney, home of the mighty Cabelas store, which though it seems it could be Finnish, we know it isn't, because it has internet there, and statues of massive bull elk sporting on the lawn.

He could be even drawing closer than that. Has he stopped for gas and a sandwich in Scotts Bluff? A deception detour from the Great Highway would be clever and unexpected. Not even orienteeringmom would think to look for him in Scotts Bluff, so he deserves bonus points. 10 bonus points to the young man who was so recently smiling in the kitchen of piutepro, but whom is not there now!

I think it is possible. I think I will go skiing at Happy Jack, and find a place where I can look far to the east, over the prairie that stretches to the horizon, and see if I can spot young John Fredrickson. If I can't see him, then surely I will see Elvis. My eyes are better than I pretend.

I saw him on gchat (gmail's chat) the other day. He was busy but i sent him a message anyway saying that Janet was looking for him. No response. This hasn't been the first time i saw him on either. I also sent him an e-mail when i first found out that thewaterstop was down, also no response. However with him being in the chat means you have to have your inbox open so he must have seen his e-mails. I think he just doesn't want to be found...

Ok, so we have JF sightings in Nebraska, Finland, Sweden, Las Vegas, Austria, New York State and Massachusetts, potentially in Texas, considering the wanted poster. And there are suspicions that the whole thing is is trick to launch an unscripted reality show. There was also suggested that there might be a potential meeting between Elvis and JF. This would increase the media coverage exponentially.
To make it completely Shakespearean, I have contacted two envoys from inside the Fredrickson camp.
Things shape up beautifully here.

I can't believe that I started this lovely piece of entertainment. Who says orienteers are boring. I have never seen a more entertaining line of fun than this. As to JF I would not be surprised that he has read this and continues to enjoy his popularity for the time being. It would be just like him to see where this all leads and never post a word for all of us to see. Like the rest of you I will continue to read and wait to see if he shows himself to us.

My research team says sometime around January 14, 1986. More to come. I am almost assuming J-J works on a profile of JF, some kind of an early unauthorized biography. "When Johnny was 3 days old, he grabbed a compass and started navigating across his crib. 3 years later he completed his first map and won the race across the play pen." Is this what you have in mind, J-J?
Jan 17, 2008 9:59 AM #
orienteeringmom:
j-man, I know that Freddie isn't shy but he sometimes likes to stay behind the scenes for a while and then make a big splash! Also his birthday is definitely in January but I thought it was a little later in the month but then since he was at piutepro house recently, I'm thinking he is more likely to be correct.

This reminds me of the old orienteering joke (and I'm happy to finally have remembered one). Your favourite TV sports commenttor announces:

I contacted at least one John Fredrickson through an envoy at one of the JF training camps. No visual sighting, but a direct confirmation of his location via a Verizon (a what?). He appears to hide in a semi underground dwelling. We will see, if JF breaks through the magic circle of disappearance. There are rumors that he is amused by his OWOL status and follows this thread closely.
