whether or not to stretch largely depends on one's goals. there are also benefits to having a larger range of motion in some areas say when you really need to scratch that one damn spot on the middle of your back

Exercise research suggests that an 'active' warmup prior to exercise is better than 'static' stretching. Static stretching post exercise and injury recovery is much more in debate.
